Another very important thing to remember about the July, 2010 timeframe is that support for Windows Server 2000 ends then as well. This means that now is a very important time be connecting with your clients still running Windows 2000 Server about plans to move to Windows Server 2008.

To help with this conversation, we are conducting an Academy Live webcast for Partners on January 15, 2010 from 8:00 – 9:00 am PST where you can learn about conversation starters, tools, and methodologies for helping your customers migrate off Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2008 R2.

Take a few moments now and register to attend the Windows 2000 Server Academy Live session. Obviously, with the deadline having come and went, I'm not going to encourage you to participate. Instead, I am going to CHALLENGE you!

I am a member of HTG. In fact, I facilitate the HTG19 group. I had one of my members state, "I went to the site, and it wants me to vouch for at least 50% of my PCs. I’m having a problem with that. Are you guys just going ahead with it?"

Here is my response:
"We have definitely moved ahead, and I would urge you to do the same. Forget about the contest for a minute. Why wouldn’t you move your team onto the Windows 7 platform? Suppose a large opportunity presented itself to migrate to Win7, BUT they ask you what OS you and your staff are running. Do you think that you are going to get the gig? How often do you think that “We are running Vista (or heaven forbid XP)…” is going to get you a new opportunity? XP and Vista experience is taken for granted. Our clients EXPECT us to have experience with the CURRENT operating systems available.

Don’t let the Techs take the lead here. Set the expectation and enforce it.

Let me jump back to XP for a minute. Now you can say with pride, “Sure we still run XP in a couple of instances… In XP mode on Win7.” No one has to be a tech laggard any longer."

Special Alert: Conference Call on The Changing MSP Business

My good friend and SBSC community advocate, Karl Palachuk is up to somthing.... Over the past several days there have been various posts, etc. across a variety of social media engines stating that some “hack” (be it a person or a procedure) shows that a Windows 7 Upgrade disc can perform a “clean” installation of Windows 7 on a blank drive from a technical perspective. Of course, from the posts I saw, they often forgot to mention a very basic, yet very important piece of information… “Technically possible” does not always mean legal. Let me explain what I mean:

Here are some very basic facts:

When you purchase software, you are purchasing the rights to run the software according to the terms of the End User License Agreement (EULA) that comes with that software.

When you install that software, you are agreeing to the terms included in the EULA you purchased.

a. For instance, in the Windows 7 EULA it states, “By using the software, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the software. Instead, return it to the retailer for a refund or credit.”

When you purchase an Upgrade license, the included EULA states that you must already own a qualifying full license to upgrade from in order to use the Upgrade license, hence the term “Upgrade.”

a. For instance, in the Windows 7 EULA it states, “To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligible for the upgrade.”

You can read the rest of Eric's article here.

Big Easy is BACK!

<table class="MsoNormalTable" style="MARGIN-LEFT: 9pt; I've had a chance to see Karl present on this topic and I have had an opportunity to review part of the manuscript. I really think that he is on to something here!

If you know anything about Karl, you know that he is absolutely fanatical about Checklists; real, live, printed on paper CHECKLISTs. This book continues on in the Palachuck tradition. The book weighs in at about 600 8 1/2 x 11 pages. There are two HUGE checklist, one for SBS 2003 and one for SBS 2008. They are worth the price of the book on their own.

However, Karl is quick to point out, "People think they want the click-by-click instructions on doing a Zero Downtime Migration. And yes, you do want that. But the meat that makes this process successful is the process." You can read his explanation of WHY you should by the book on his blog post, The "Guts" of the Network Migration Workbook

Order the book at the Pre-Sale price of $199 today. Karl has a sizable collection of books written by himself and other in the SMB space. This security advisory provides information about our ongoing investigation into vulnerabilities in the public and private versions of Microsoft's Active Template Library (ATL). In the advisory, we provide information about what Microsoft is doing in its ongoing investigation into the issue described, and we also offer guidance to both developers and IT professionals.

· Guidance for Developers (bulletin MS09-035): The Microsoft ATL is used by software developers to create controls or components for the Windows platform. Microsoft strongly recommends that developers who have built controls or components with ATL take immediate action to evaluate their controls for exposure to a vulnerable condition and follow the guidance provided to create controls and components that are not vulnerable. For more information on the vulnerabilities and guidance to address issues in ATL, see MS09-035, "Vulnerabilities in Visual Studio Active Template Library Could Allow Remote Code Execution."
· Guidance for IT Professionals (bulletin MS09-034): To help better protect customers while developers update their components and controls, Microsoft has developed a new defense-in-depth technology. This new defense-in-depth technology built into Internet Explorer helps to protect customers from future attacks using the Microsoft Active Template Library vulnerabilities described in this Advisory and Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-035. IT professionals should first assess and prepare their own systems, then help their customers deploy the Internet Explorer Security Update offered in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-034, "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer."
Please see below for important resources and a bulletin summary.

Key Resources

· A single page write-up of prescriptive guidance for customers, IT professionals, and developers http://www.microsoft.com/security/atl.aspx
· Full text of Security Advisory 973882 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/973882.mspx
· Full bulletin for MS09-034, with guidance for IT professionals http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms09-034.mspx
· Full bulletin for MS09-035, with guidance for developers http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms09-035.mspx
· We recommend Microsoft partners use the Microsoft TechNet Security TechCenter as a source of security information http://technet.microsoft.com/security

Regarding Information Consistency

We recommend that Microsoft partners use the Microsoft TechNet Security TechCenter as a key source of security information: http://technet.microsoft.com/security, and that you sign up for comprehensive alerts at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/notify.mspx.
